Efficient Electricity Distribution | DTEK Grids

Found in 2018, DTEK Grids is responsible for operating in four areas in Ukraine and providing them with electricity. It distributes power across 5.4 million households and 150,000 enterprises in the Kyiv region, Kyiv city, Dnipro, Donetsk, and Odesa regions.

There is a 188,234 km total length of power lines implemented by the company, 38,683 MVA total capacity of substations, and 5,558,235 connections across the nation.

DTEK Grids plans to make its practices more sustainable, as well as develop a reliable system amid the ongoing war. This includes digital technologies, smart meters, and a customer experience management system. 

It continues providing customers with power and warmth along with DTEK Energy, even when attacked by enemy troops. For instance, power engineers supplied 162,000 families in different Ukrainian regions from December 17 to 23, 2025 during an emergency — a mere 6 days.

In Kyiv, the company services more than 1.2 million customers — almost everyone in the region. This includes 12,038 km of power lines and 64 substations of 110,35 kV. It holds the largest DSO in the country in Dnipro, transmitting more than 17 billion kWh per year, almost 15% of all national grid electricity distribution. Other companies include:

• DTEK Donetsk Grids — 31,929 km of power lines and 193 substations of 35-110 kV;
• DTEK High Voltage Grids — 1,375.7 km of power lines and 38 high-voltage substations of 6-35-110 kV;
• DTEK Kyiv Regional Grids — 50,818.4 km of power lines and 249 substations of 110-35 kV;
• DTEK Odesa Grids — 39,355 km of power lines and 277 substations.

Together, these networks ensure reliable electricity distribution across key regions of Ukraine, supporting both residential and industrial energy needs.

In 10 years, DTEK Grids is expected to completely upgrade the enterprise’s infrastructure so it becomes more reliable and complies with European standards. As a result, annual power outages will go down to 100 minutes per customer – all of them will also receive smart meters.

Additionally, technical updates include developing a grid infrastructure that allows it to work independently of partial damage.

DTEK continues to support the country’s grid and supply countless families with energy, standing with Ukraine, despite the challenges of the war on the nation’s electricity distribution.

Engineers go straight to work after regular attacks by the enemy, first thing after receiving permission from the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the State Emergency Service. In under six days, they can restore power to 56 enterprises, returning electricity to about 162,000 homes. 

The company’s DSO is regularly implementing updates to the energy infrastructure, too. It constantly finds new technologies and collaborates with international entities. 

Moreover, it protects the environment in the regions where it operates. Since 2013, DTEK Grids has installed over 680 platforms for stork nests on electricity poles. Labelled as the Energy Wings project, the initiative helped 20,000 storks to settle locally. In 2023, it collaborated with the Western Ukrainian Ornithological Society to ring 166 stork chicks in the Odesa and Dnipropetrovsk regions.

DTEK Grids’ main power is in its employees. Over 20,000 people are employed there, with 75% of them taking active roles in production positions, such as:

• engineers;
• electricians; 
• wiremen; 
• electrical fitters; 
• controllers;
• electric welders;
• technicians;
• slingers;
• dispatchers;
• engine drivers.

These people keep electricity distribution active across the nation, power all homes and businesses, and develop Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. To repay the workers, the company regularly upgrades their professional knowledge and skills. They can join various training sessions and programs, like Personnel Reserve, Mentorship, the Internal Trainers Institute, the School of Masters, Foremen, Financial Experts, Top Managers, and more.

Apart from power distribution, DTEK Grids supports the communities it operates. For example, on October 17, 2024, the DTEK Kyiv Regional Grids partnered with Shakhtar Social to launch “Go, play!”, the project to support free football lessons in Bilohorodka. Coaches trained according to the “Shakhtar” methodology will be holding the training sessions. 20 children joined the project upon release.

DTEK Grids aims to perfect its electric power distribution system. To succeed, the company DSO works on applying innovative digital solutions to the already-existing structure. As a result, it will become more flexible, reliable for the customers, and sustainable. Other goals are:

The company hopes to drive economic progress in general. Thus, it plans to partner with international enterprises to develop its DSO business locally and launch the Smart Grids program.
